- Magnesium is an essential mineral for cattle. At low temperatures in spring and fall, grass contains less magnesium and calcium. Even when the grass contains a lot of moisture, cattle can develop a magnesium deficiency. This is because the high water content of the grass accelerates digestion, leaving less time for the absorption of important minerals such as magnesium. Cows cannot store magnesium, which means they must obtain sufficient magnesium through their daily feed.
